Pilaros Taste of the Danforth

The Pilaros Taste of the Danforth festival celebrates the multicultural diversity of Toronto with emphasis on the Hellenic culture. For the last 19 years, Torontonians, local residents and throngs of tourists have flocked to Greek Town every August, turning it into Canada’s largest street festival. For 2& ½ action-packed days, the Danforth was blocked off for three kilometres from Broadview to Jones. The biggest crowd pleaser is mouth-watering Greek cuisine like souvlaki and spanakopita (spinach pie) gyros, baklava, honey balls, gyros, roasted quail, corn on the cob and calamari. The options and variety, which includes Thai, Japanese, and Mexican among other cultural delights, makes Taste of the Danforth a gastronomical Mecca.
Entertainment at different stages dotted the Danforth. Musical performances ranged from Greek music to pop, rock, bluegrass, country. R & B, jazz to a cappella. Sports fans could take a raptor shot on net, visit the Maple Leaf trailer, enjoy the TFC soccer lounge, learn about lacrosse or play at the gigantic football table. Argo and Toronto Rock cheerleaders and a few professional athletes were on hand for photos. The Kids’ Fun Zone definitely had a Hollywood feel to it. There was a play lab from ParaNorman, an archery challenge from The Hunger Games, zombies from Resident Evil: Retribution and a scene of the upcoming horror flick The Possession. The Kids’ Zone also offered face painting, water game, ball tosses, Catch a Fish, crafts and the Toronto Zoo even had a touch table
The Taste of the Danforth has always been about celebrating life, family, heritage and food. Everyone hopes it stays true to its roots. It is where the young and the old share a seamless connection. Music and dance keep our souls in touch with what is really important. It is where you can stroll, instead of run, and just savour the moment.
